Free checkers in your browser
Club Checkers is a free game of American checkers, also known as English draughts, played on the standard 8×8 board. Play against the computer at one of four strengths, or pass the device back and forth with a friend. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Your game is saved on this device as you play, so you can close the tab and carry on later.
Pick an opponent
- Easy always takes the biggest capture it can find and otherwise moves at random. Good for learning the rules.
- Medium looks two moves ahead and counts material. It won't leave pieces hanging, but it can be lured into traps.
- Hard looks four moves ahead, the same depth the original Club Checkers server used.
- Expert looks eight moves ahead, keeps calculating through capture sequences, and weighs position as well as material: advancing pawns, holding the center and guarding its back row.
You can play either color. Red always moves first, so choose White if you want the computer to open.
How to move
- Click one of your pieces. With hints on, every piece that can move is outlined.
- Click a highlighted square to move there.
- For a double or triple jump, click each landing square in turn. Press Esc to start the move again.
Captures are compulsory: if you can jump, you must, and a jump sequence has to be finished. A piece that reaches the far side is crowned king and can then move and capture backwards too. You win by capturing all of your opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal move. If forty moves each go by without a capture or a plain piece moving, the game is drawn.
The move list beside the board uses standard checkers notation, numbering the playable squares 1 to 32. New to the game? Start with how to play and the full rules, then sharpen up with our strategy guides and puzzles. Want to know how the site came about? Read about Club Checkers.
