The triangle peg game, free in your browser

Tricky Triangle is the classic 15-hole peg puzzle: a wooden triangle full of pegs with one hole left empty. You jump one peg over another into an empty hole and take the jumped peg away, and you keep going until no jumps are left. The fewer pegs you leave, the better. Leave just one and you've solved it. Many people know it as the Cracker Barrel peg game, from the restaurant tables where it has kept diners busy for decades.

There's nothing to install and no account to create. Your game is saved on this device as you play, so you can close the tab and carry on later.

How to play

  1. Choose where to start: click any peg to take it out. That hole is the first empty one.
  2. Click a peg that can jump. With helpers on, every peg that has a jump is outlined.
  3. Click the highlighted hole to jump there. The peg you jumped over comes off the board.
  4. Keep jumping until no peg can move. One peg left is a perfect game.

Jumps go in a straight line along the rows or the two diagonals, over exactly one neighbouring peg, into an empty hole right behind it. Jumping is never compulsory, but you can't pass either: the game ends as soon as there's no jump to make. The full rules, with diagrams, are on the how to play page.

Hints, undo and your record

Stuck? Hint picks a jump that still leads to the best finish. With helpers on, the panel also tells you whether a one-peg finish is still possible, so you know the moment a jump goes wrong and can Undo it. The solver behind the hints checks every possible continuation, so it is never wrong about what can still be done.

There are 15 holes to start from, and they don't all play the same. The small triangle under Your record fills in each starting hole you've solved. Can you fill all fifteen?
